Multi-Languaging: A Proposal for Concurrent Teaching of Multiple Languages

Dear Prospective Donor:

I seek funding to advance the concept of concurrent or simultaneous teaching of multiple languages.

"Multi-Languaging" is a new multilingual or plurilingual learning proposal that enables simultaneous learning of multiple languages.
In this case, it shows how to simultaneously learn five languages.
It is applied to learning of three pan-Indian languages (Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit), one international language (English), and one vernacular language (Telugu).
All languages start from First Class (Grade or Standard).
(The terms "Class," "Grade," and "Standard" are used interchangeably.)
Any other vernacular language can replace Telugu.
The proposal arose out of the specific situation of India.

This proposal has two parts to it, both new:

a) Objective – To teach/learn five languages,
b) Method – To achieve that objective.

The number of languages is not 2, 3, or 4―it is 5.
That number has its genesis in the desire to achieve India’s national integration and linguistic equality across India.

It remains to be determined whether learning five languages by the proposed "concurrent/simultaneous" method or the existing "sequential" method is more effective.
That determination needs to be made using a clinical trial-like setting in which the investigators would evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new treatment as it is tested.

The concept is elaborated in terms of over 30 easily understandable questions and answers.
The method is demonstrated by providing standalone, sentence-by-sentence, five-sentence-by-five-sentence (i.e., sentence-by-sentence in 5 languages), and word-by-word translations of a given document to facilitate simultaneous/correlative learning.

This supplementary website explores the potential applicability of the Multi-Languaging method to teach/learn seven European languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and Greek―all or a desired sub-combination thereof concurrently.
The concept can be extended to any combination of or to any country’s languages.
Many countries in the world are officially or unofficially bilingual or multilingual.
Each such country or region is predictably beset by a measure of its linguistic dissension.
The multi-languaging method will likely come in handy for teaching the combination of languages as may be desired or needed for a given country or region in the world.

There exist any number of methods to teach individual languages or their alphabets.
However, to the best of my knowledge none exists that teaches, for example, five or seven languages all together in a correlative and integrated way.
It is my thesis that relational learning imparts a new thinking skillset/power and new enjoyment to the learner―children and adults alike.
This new proposal to simultaneously teach/learn multiple languages is transformative in nature, scope, and potential impact, to my knowledge.
It is expected to produce a new educational paradigm or practice for the teaching of languages.

I would like to provide a brief personal and professional background that is further detailed under "Biography," at indian.multilanguaging.org.
I am a former academic physician having practiced pathology and engaged as a medical educator and biomedical investigator.
I graduated from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India with a University Gold Medal in Medicine, and then spent 3 years as a research student in Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India, after which I moved to the USA and completed my residency in Pathology at Yale University.
I held professorships at the University of Rochester in New York, the University of South Florida (USF), and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
I was a National Institutes of Health-funded Principal Investigator in the fields of stem-cell biology and proteomics.

I have always been driven by a passion to contribute to the diverse society in which we live.
You may ask why I am switching my career from medicine/biology to investigating the methods of teaching languages.
My passion for languages has existed since my high school days, and I have continually nurtured it.
Being an outsider to the field, and with my diverse background, I bring a new vigor to this language project, and this allows me to innovate.

The current proposal provides the guiding principles for choosing lessons and creating supplementary materials.
Detailed explanations of the many aspects of the proposal and related topics have been provided in the reader-friendly "question and answer" format.
They provide a comprehensive review of the proposal.
The website hosts these documents in all five languages—English, Telugu, Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit—so they are understandable to speakers of any of these languages.
Moving forward, appropriate textbooks and tools need to be created for the concurrent teaching of five different language alphabets to pre-school children, and lessons to I-X class children.

This proposal was conceived in the spirit of scientific inquiry.
The effectiveness of the proposal remains to be investigated and determined.
Appropriate textbooks need to be prepared first―even if for investigation.
This requires external funding support.
